LyX 2.3.6.2 for Mac is free to download from our application library. The most frequent installer filenames for the application include: LyX-2.0.6 qt4.dmg and LyX-1.6.6.1-Mac-Universal.dmg etc. The most popular versions of the application are 2.1, 2.0 and 1.6. The application lies within Productivity Tools, more precisely Office Tools.

- Python - scripting language
- Required for configuration and conversion scripts. Tested with version 2.7. Python 3.0 is work in progress.
1.1 Document typesetting
- (La)TeX distribution
- In order to properly use LyX to create documents, you'll need to have a LaTeX installation. You can use TeXLive or MikTeX on Windows and *nix, or MacTeX on Mac OS.
Since LyX is based on LaTeX, practically any tool made for use with LaTeX can be used with LyX. The CTAN is an archive of packages, tools, documentation and much more about LaTeX, and therefore an invaluable resource if you want to become a power user of LaTeX (and LyX). Sep 15, 2017 Download. LyX/Mac is available as a binary for Mac OS X 10.4 and later. (Note additional prerequisites below.) The download page is here. For users who prefer emacs-like modifier key bindings, there is additional information on customizing these keys, including patched binary versions. The download was scanned for viruses by our system. We also recommend you check the files before installation. The download version of LyX for Mac is 2.3.6.2. The contents of the download are original and were not modified in any way. On screen, LyX looks like any word processor; its printed output — or richly cross-referenced PDF, just as readily produced — looks like nothing else. LyX is released under a Free Software/Open Source license, runs on Linux/Unix, Windows, and Mac OS X, and is available in several languages. Features: LyX is a fully featured document processor.
1.2 Image conversion
- ImageMagick tools
- LyX used ImageMagick to convert your images when no other converter is available. For manipulating with Postscript files you will need Ghostscript too.
1.3 Spell checking and dictionaries
More spellchecking backends are supported:
- Hunspell
- the spell checker used by OpenOffice and Firefox. Dictionaries of OpenOffice can be reused (alternatively they can be grabbed at our mirror repository).
- GNU Aspell
- is a Free and Open Source spell checker supported by LyX. It is said to do a very good job of coming up with possible suggestions. Dictionaries are available here.
- Enchant
- wrapper that provides automatic access to many spell checking libraries (ispell, aspell, hspell, hunspell, etc.).
- Thesaurus and its dictionaries
- LyX ships the MyThes library itself, however, it does not ship any thesaurus dictionaries, and those do have to be installed separately. The OpenOffice thesaurus dictionaries can be reused or again grabbed at our mirror repository).
2. Optional Software
2.1 LaTeX packages
- CTAN - The Comprehensive TeX Archive Network.

2.2 Document viewing
- Adobe Reader
- The well-known PDF Viewer
- Free PDF Readers
- Free and Open Source alternatives to the Adobe Reader

2.5 Typesetting tools
Install Lyx
- ChkTeX Homepage - performs typographical checking.
- LyX can use ChkTeX as an aid to find common typograhical errors in your document.
- NoWeb - literate programming.
- Use LyX to write programs whose documentation and manuals are included in the program.
- Sweave - literate programming.
- Tool that allows to embed the R code for complete data analyses in latex documents.

Binaries for older versions of Mac OS X are available here: LyX-2.3.6.2+qt5-legacy-x86_64-cocoa.dmg, and the GPG signature is here. Some functionality is not available with these (e.g., SyncTeX).
Before you install LyX you need to install a TeX system such as MacTeX.
In case the links above do not work, try this mirror. If the download is too slow try some other mirror closer to you.
On Mac OS X Mountain Lion you'll get the error message:'LyX' can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. See the explanation here for a work around.
See the LyX/Mac wiki page for further installation tips.
2.3 Linux binaries
Major Linux distributions take care of LyX binaries themselves and you will find LyX in their repositories. For more details about your distribution look in our wiki.
For Ubuntu users, Liviu Andronic maintains a stable PPA (Personal Package Archive). See the LyX on Ubuntu wiki page for information and instructions.

6. Mirrors
Please use one of the ftp mirrors below in case our default server (located in France) is slow or unavailable. Both ftp://ftp.lyx.org and https://ftp.lip6.fr/ point to the same primary server, but unless you actively check the signatures of downloaded files, you better use https protocol.
Note that we don't have any direct control over the content in the mirrors, so you are well advised to check signatures of the downloaded files to make sure they are identical to those on the primary site.

7. Checksums & signing
We provide gpg-signed tarballs and binaries. That allows you to check integrity of downloaded package and provides guaranty that no one tampered with the binary on the ftp server or on the way to your computer. Our GPG key ID is 0xDE7A44FAC7FB382D (LyX Release Manager). The signatures are found next to the tarballs and binaries.
- To initially import our key via GnuPG, do this:gpg --recv-keys FE66471B43559707AFDAD955DE7A44FAC7FB382D
Attention: Please be careful to use this full fingerprint, spoofed version of shortened fingerprint is already in the wild and it is easy to make new fake ones!
- After that, each time you need to verify a tarball:gpg --verify lyx-2.3.6.tar.gz.sig
to check the signature (or any other signed file you want to verify). Watch out for the 'Good signature...' string.
8. Development versions
Please do not use these for any serious work! They are only provided for testing and development purposes.
